World Idol

Fox and the producers behind the long-expected global edition of the Pop Idol/American Idol franchise have set a Christmas Day date for the first-ever World Idol smackdown.

"Idol" winners from 11 different countries - including original U.S. winner Kelly Clarkson - will face off in the two-hour special, which will air on Fox in the U.S. on Dec. 25 at 8 p.m. In a one-hour special the following week, on New Year's Day, the World Idol will be crowned.

FremantleMedia and 19 are still figuring out how to handle the viewer voting. It's obvious that the voting will have to be weighted to some degree; otherwise, the singer from the nation with the largest population (in this case, Kelly Clarkson of the U.S.) would win in a landslide. The program will feature an international panel of judges (one from each country) and voting from across the world.

Besides Clarkson, contestants include the U.K.'s Will Young, South Africa's Heinz Winckler, Poland's Alicja Janosz, the Netherlands' Jamai Loman, Germany's Alexander Klaws, Norway's Kurt Nilsen, Lebanon's Diana Karazon, Belgium's Peter Evrad, Canada's Ryan Malcolm and an as-yet-to-be-determined winner from Australia.
