Keanu will be saying goodbye to "The Matrix" and Neo soon, something that he's been around for years now. "The three films, in working on them, have been some of the best days of my life as a person and as an artist. So I'm very grateful to be a part of them, just grateful."
There's been much talk about how the films have spiritual and religious symbolism. "Yeah, it's one of the motifs. I don't know if it's a defining motif or a motif that is ultimately all it is," says Reeves. "But certainly, he is The One. There's a messiah aspect to it. Whether it's Christian is open. I mean, there is some intention to it, but Neo isn't Christ." With this in mind, playing the role would of course be a tough burden to carry. "Well, it's a traditional mythic hero role. It's a journey of self-knowledge and sacrifice leading to a kind of restoration of the community."
Keanu says that there's no ambiguity in his mind about what the movies mean. "I think just the platform itself, dealing with the nature of reality, cause and affect, fate, life, choices. I think it's more of a provocative platform, hopefully one that is communicated in a fun way. I think it's more of launching points than ambiguity. These are questions that have no answers. But you can search for the answers. Ultimately, you have to come to them yourself."
That sounds a lot like what The Oracle would say, isn't it? Perhaps that's what it's all about. But the Wachowski's haven't made it easy for moviegoers to come to many answers, which is a good thing leading into the third film. "I think in the second film, 'Reloaded,' when you find that Neo is not 'The One' but the 'Sixth One' in the cycle of messiahs, as an element of control, I think is pretty cool. You know, the directors and writers - Larry and Andy Wachowski - to set up their film, that is, being as one of the elements in the piece is pretty cool. Where the hero decides not to save the community but to do it for a personal love, awesome! Because we have to make personal choices."
While he doesn't think the series and its characters have become cultural icons, he does hope you walk away with something after seeing the films. "People have responded to them, which is great, because I am a fan of them. I think they are great. I hope that people enjoy the films and get something out of it."
You won't have to worry about that Keanu. With all the "Matrix" craze, it's hard to believe that Keanu has another movie coming out just a little over a month after "Revolutions", called Something's Gotta Give, with Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton. "Diane Keaton is so fantastic, and Jack Nicholson is fantastic. It's a romantic comedy directed by Nancy Meyers. I have a supporting role. I play Jack Nicholson's doctor, and I fall in love with Diane Keaton. Not a bad gig."
Not a bad gig at all. Watch Keanu Reeves play Neo one more time in The Matrix Revolutions, coming soon!
