Not so, MGM tells us. Queen Latifah is still playing the lead in the film and Fox is not involved. No story details on the new film are available at this time.

By the end of the day, Morduch Halsman, a stubborn, aggressive, well-to-do dentist, determined to "make a man" of his son by the brute force of physical labor, was dead. Philippe maintained that his father had fallen and was still alive when he ran for help, but when he returned, his father's body lay face down, his head split open with an ax, his blood and belongings strewn about the area. With vague circumstantial evidence pointing to Philippe, he was immediately arrested and charged with patricide. No one wanted to defend an outsider, let alone a Jew, and the local community hoped for a speedy trial that would wash their hands of the monstrous act. Deliberately uninformed of his rights, Philippe was left in the dark of his cold cell until his mother and sister, alerted to the crisis, managed to procure a lawyer from the Jewish quarter in Vienna. With no time to prepare his case, Philippe and his passionate lawyer were left scrambling as the trial began. While witnesses steered their testimony towards a guilty verdict, and while the courtroom saw such gruesome evidence as Morduch's head, severed from his body by local autopsists, Philippe found himself so alienated he could not even bring himself to help his own cause. Enraged that the trial was conducted with such hostility towards him, he sat brooding with anger, given to frequent outbursts of frustration. In a mere four days, the highly-charged, emotional trial came to a close. Though no evidence or any clear motive had been established, the deliberation was over as soon as it began. Philippe Halsman was convicted of patricide and sentenced to ten years in prison thus becoming the first Jewish victim of the incipient anti-Semitism of National Socialism. Not until well-known international figures such as Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud and Thomas Mann rallied to his cause, demanding a fair trial, was Philippe freed. Under the condition that he never return to Austria, he made his way out of the country harboring the darkest of wounds. Not only was he never allowed to properly grieve his father's death, but he would forever be haunted by visions of his falling father, of the severed head, and the black hole of his own memory, filled with doubt, guilt and grief. Though he never spoke publicly about that fateful summer, its influence was sharply felt in the photography that would soon make Philippe famous. Commissioned by the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Brando, Picasso, Nixon and the Kennedys, Halsman turned formal fashion shots into serious investigations of character. Engaging his subjects in disarming chatter, he would often ask them to jump, which he believed would free them of their postures and defenses. "When you ask a person to jump, his attention is mostly directed toward the act of jumping and the mask falls so that the real person appears." From surrealist flourishes such as headless bodies or bodiless heads, to "jumpology", which would become his trademark, Philippe pursued his quest to uncover the hidden truths behind the masks of his subjects. But only in private would he turn this investigation upon himself. It seems that Philippe was able to witness his father's true character in that horrible moment so many years ago, and perhaps, in doing so, was able to love him in absolute. But as to the question of murder, obscured by the trauma of the moment and the whirlwind of prejudice in its aftermath, Philippe himself was rendered impotent to answer.

MGM is hot for helmer Brett Ratner. The director behind "Rush Hour" is in negotiations to team with John Travolta on the studio's "Be Cool," the sequel to the 1995 feature "Get Shorty." With Ratner near a signed deal, MGM and the project's producers -- former Jersey partners Danny DeVito, Michael Shamberg and Stacy Sher -- are hoping to get the project into production before year's end. The only hitch could be that Ratner still owes his next film to New Line Cinema, home of the "Rush Hour" franchise. However, sources said that situation could be worked out if "Cool" can be scheduled around a third installment of the Jackie Chan-Chris Tucker starrer. The "Cool" vehicle will see Travolta reprise his role as Miami mobster-turned-movie producer Chili Palmer, who in the sequel decides that he's had enough with the movie business and suddenly finds himself mixing it up with the rough and tough music business. INTERVIEWS: Keira Knightley on Pirates of the Caribbean

Keira Knightley has been to Disneyland and is quite familiar with the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, but ultimately, her character in the movie based on that ride is a separate entity. "I think the film is so completely removed from the ride," Knightley said. "There really isn't anything in the story that is the same as the ride, except for a little bit like the jail sequences and certain aspects that are homage to the ride. So no, I don't think really, truthfully I needed to go [to Disneyland] for research purposes but I enjoyed it a lot. It was definitely worthwhile."

Knightley plays a woman kidnapped by cursed pirates who believe she can help them undo the curse. In a classic pirate movie moment, Knightley is forced to walk the plank. "I was up there for about two days. Yes, two days to film that scene. It was at least two days to film pretty much ever scene because we did it from every possible conceivable angle. Plus, there is a lot of smoke in the movie. Lots of it. And if the wind changed, then the smoke wouldn't be in the shot. So we were constantly waiting for the winds to be in the right direction. And then they'd move the boat had to make sure if the wind was over here, the boat would be there. So, it was a lot of waiting around. Me standing on the plank getting vertigo. And then at the end of two days, they said, 'Well, okay, you don't have to really jump off.' And I said, 'You're joking. I've been standing up here for the last two days, now you're saying I don't have to jump off?' So I said I'll do it. I just did it once."

As her first starring role in a big studio movie - She had a small part in "The Phantom Menace" and a lead role in the British indie Bend it Like Beckham - Knightley was most impressed by her costars, Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush.

"I can't say enough good things about Johnny. I think he's fantastic. I think there's no question that he is one of the most talented actors around at the moment. The fact that he's been courageous enough to absolutely go for this character in a completely unique way, it completely sums up Johnny. So I loved it. It was very spontaneous, it was very funny. It kind of all gave us all a freedom to sort of play around and do what we wanted to do. He can talk about absolutely anything. He's possibly one of the most intelligent, most well-read people I know. Which personally I love, because like me, he's a school drop-out. He's incredibly generous and just gorgeous. And as my mom said, 'He must have been brought up very well!' So I had a great time working with him, and he made me laugh all the time which is all you can ask for when you're on a six-month shoot. He know a lot about British comedy. Maybe having lived in Europe for such a long time, just the humor was everything that I've been brought up with, so we just clicked."

And Rush, "He's incredible. I've been a big fan of Geoffrey for ages. It's amazing watching him work. I wouldn't say he's method, but he's certainly more method that I am. He went through an incredible amount of preparation time. It was about three hours of make-up for every single day, and prosthetics and everything. So it was incredibly watching him prepare but again, as soon as you're finished, it was dinner and wine and a fantastic laugh."

Knightley auditioned for the film several times, with director Gore Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, to get the role. "I met [Bruckheimer] in London with the London casting director. Four days after that, they phoned up and said, 'We want to fly you to LA to meet Gore Verbinski, the director and the guys at Disney.' So, I met Gore and we did a proper audition and screen tests and I read with him and discussed the character and all that kind of stuff. We dissected the character and the script, and really went through it. I told Gore my ideas and he told me his ideas. We just had a really nice chat and it was really cool. It was very laid back. I was very nervous about having been flown all the way from Britain, and thinking I could really bugger this up and wouldn't that be embarrassing. But it was really a nice audition, very little pressure. Then they said, 'Okay, can you fly to New York tomorrow and meet Jerry?' So, I did and we talked about writers because my mom's a writer and his wife's a writer. And sports. And a bit about the character. And I got the part two weeks later."

Knightley will next be seen playing Guinevere in a realistic adaptation of King Arthur, from "Pirates" producer Jerry Bruckheimer. "With 'King Arthur', we're trying to make a reality out of the myth. It's going to be very, very, very raw. It's going to be fascinating. There is a lot of action. I'm doing a lot of action which will be great. And I get to sword fight, which I didn't get in 'Pirates' which I was very pissed off about. But it's all right, Jerry is giving me a sword fight in 'King Arthur; so it's just fine. It's going to be very different to this one."

She said that film will require more from her physically than "Pirates" did. "During 'Pirates' I can safely say I did not do one bit of exercise at all. And it was all location catering and craft services so your big American cakes, which are much bigger than the British ones, which are fantastic. So, there was a lot of that. Now, doing 'King Arthur', the one thing that Jerry and all the guys at Disney said was, 'You have to get really fit to do this.' So, I've got personal trainers. It's terrifying. You get a very unnatural color and as soon as I finish 'King Arthur' I will be going back to my slobbish ways, I assure you."

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl opens July 9. King Arthur is aimed for a December, 2004 release.

Patricia Velazquez is set to star as the wife of Emilio Zapata in Alfonso Arau's long-in-development biopic Zapata. The project is in production in Morelos, Mexico.

The indie biopic sees Latin singing star Alejandro Fernandez star as the late Mexican revolutionary hero elected leader of his village, San Miguel Anenecuilco, in 1909. He went on to organize an army, fighting against repression and for the socialization of the land. Lured to a meeting with government officials, Zapata was assassinated in April 1919.

The script was written by Arau. Velazquez previously starred in the two "Mummy" films and has Renny Harlin's action film Mindhunters.

The short-lived TV series Firefly is moving to the big screen. Creator Joss Whedon has teamed with Universal Pictures to turn the series into a feature film.

In addition to having adapted it for the big screen, Whedon will also make his feature directorial debut with the project. Plans are to see Firefly go into production in first-quarter 2004.

The action-adventure series was set 500 years in the future and centered on a crew aboard a spaceship. The feature version will incorporate the mythology from the show but will take on a more epic feel. Whedon hopes to enlist the entire cast to come back for the feature, depending on their previous commitments, with new characters added as well.

The plank has only one symbol that Patrick Gates can identify. The symbol is Cibola (see-bowl-uh) meaning the City of Gold. In order to define the rest the have to go to Ben's mother, Patrick's divorced wife. After 32 years it brings back old arguments. After that the other clue is in the President's desk in the Oval Office in the White House (which Ben and Abigail sneak into) to discover that the clue lies in The President's Book. But in order to see the book, their choice is either get elected president or kidnap the President of the United States. Which do they choose? It's obvious. With Wilkinson close on their tail, they find the book in the Library of Congress. The conspiracy then crosses to Mount Rushmore where the clue was on the hills, but (according to the Book) President Calvin Coolidge had the faces carved in so no one can find the City of Gold. When they get there they find out that they must work with Wilkinson since he has some clues of his own. Who will claim Cibola? And will the name of Gates be known as murder?

Fox and the producers behind the long-expected global edition of the Pop Idol/American Idol franchise have set a Christmas Day date for the first-ever World Idol smackdown.

"Idol" winners from 11 different countries - including original U.S. winner Kelly Clarkson - will face off in the two-hour special, which will air on Fox in the U.S. on Dec. 25 at 8 p.m. In a one-hour special the following week, on New Year's Day, the World Idol will be crowned.

FremantleMedia and 19 are still figuring out how to handle the viewer voting. It's obvious that the voting will have to be weighted to some degree; otherwise, the singer from the nation with the largest population (in this case, Kelly Clarkson of the U.S.) would win in a landslide. The program will feature an international panel of judges (one from each country) and voting from across the world.

Avril Lavigne's hit single "Sk8er Boi" is heading to the big screen with Paramount Pictures optioning the song and hiring David Zabel to adapt its words into a feature film to be produced by studio-based MTV Films and Alphaville.

As Disney's Finding Nemo is just a week away now, Newsweek interviewed Disney CEO Michael Eisner who mentioned development details on several of their animated projects. First, he talked about the Kate Winslet and Dame Judi Dench-voiced Gnomeo & Juliet...

Eisner can't help himself from getting involved in the details when he�s passionate�about making a movie or, better yet, making a deal. "I've been nervous about these gnomes since day one," Eisner warned his animators during a recent meeting. Eisner fears the protagonists of "Gnomeo & Juliet," a tale of forbidden love among lawn ornaments, may look klutzy and tacky. His new animation chief, David Stainton�whom Eisner plucked from the TV-animation division with an eye toward holding down feature costs�assures him the gnomes will be nimble and their gardens only "a bit garish," with a supporting cast of plaster frogs, a Greek torso and a pink flamingo. Eisner likes the flamingo. "Remember the flamingos in 'Fantasia 2000'?" he muses. "That came from 10 years of my wife and a major shareholder sending uglier and uglier flamingos to each other as a joke."

Meanwhile, it appears that My Peoples has been renamed Elgin's People. The article refers to the film as featuring "a computer-generated rag doll voiced by Dolly Parton, animated in three dimensions (how else?)."

Newsweek also confirmed that "Eisner wants to extend the lives of Disney's older characters by reanimating some classics for a new look. Imagine a 3-D Peter Pan soaring over a digitized London."

A Peek at the Alexander

Ain't-It-Cool-News received a great report from someone who got a tour of Pinewood Studios where sets were build for Oliver Stone's Alexander and Joel Schumacher's Phantom of the Opera. Here's a small glimpse of what the person saw for the latter...

The first set we got to visit was a intricate set of tunnels which were supposed to be situated underneath the theatre, they were still being constructed, although most of the work had been completed, the final touches were hastily being applied as shooting was to commence on Friday 5th December, this is pretty much were reality set in! I mean there's me and my mate Shaun, stood on a set, at Pinewood bloody Studio's gawping at a underground cavern and a complete tunnel system that was gonna be in one of next year's biggest films! The detail was amazing, I got to see two huge statues that were going to be used at the entrance of the cavern all constructed out of polysterene but appeared to be solid stone, complete with growing moss and water stains. The next set we got to visit was of a ballroom! Complete with black and white marbled floor and the most beautiful gold staircase I have ever seen, hang on a mo I aint seen any gold staircases before so anyway it was jaw dropping, the extra's were still on set all dressed in amazing ball gowns complete with white wigs and masks, vast red velvet drapes graced the walls, the site was simply breathe taking.
